The M855 bullet offers identical ballistic performance to any other FMJ. It feeds reliably and keeps an AR-15’s barrel from becoming a leaden mess. The difference is that its core is made of two components: a lead rear section, and a steel “penetrator” front half.

When this round’s magnetic bullet connects with a thin sheet of metal at close to medium range, its tough tip helps it to drill through the thing like it’s made of warm margarine. So strong a bullet also penetrates around 15 to 20” into soft tissue at close range, and there’s a good chance its lead and steel halves will even break apart. That equals two wound channels for the price of one, which is why penetrator ammo is so effective for self-defense (so long as avoiding overpenetration isn’t a concern).

Winchester’s M855 ammo is new production. A lot of people are lead astray by its brass cases’ unique appearance, which is simply the result of the standard annealing process. This ammo’s concealed steel-tipped bullets won’t harm a rifle’s barrel, but at 62 grains they’ll deliver the best accuracy out of a 1:8 or 1:9 twist barrel. (1:7 should be just fine for casual target shooting.)
