Details

While 7.62X25 Tokarev ammo delivers impressive terminal ballistics, whether out of a pistol or a carbine, the Russians found that the firearm they developed for it (the Tokarev TT-30 and TT-33) suffered from dependability issues in the field. While it was difficult to affect a widespread recall and replacement in the field during this discovery (in the middle of World War II), returning back to their older 1895 Nagant revolvers in the meantime, they nevertheless contemplated a replacement at the earliest opportunity. Erring on the side of simplicity and reliability, they developed the 9mm Makarov: a slightly larger round than the .380 ACP – the previously largest cartridge that was considered practical to use in a a simply blow back designed firearm. The Makarov quickly became the Soviet Bloc standard sidearm caliber. Silver Bear’s 94 grain hollow point bullet has a muzzle velocity of 1135 feet per second with 270 foot pounds of energy. This is a suitable choice for personal defense, but is also great for range training: using the performance ammo in training removes a mitigating variable. Come to think of it, so does having 1,000 rounds available.

Barnaul continues to provide service ammunition to the Russian military and their commercial line, Silver Bear, is manufactured to the same exacting standards. Steel cased, berdan primed cases are not reloadable, but the value is in the initial purchase cost of a bullet that can serve quite reliably as a self defense round.
