The .264 Winchester Magnum is the little brother of the three belted magnum cartridges Winchester introduced in the later 1950’s and early 1960’s based on the .375 Holland & Holland. The other two being the .338 and .458 Winchester Magnums, the .264 was debuted in 1959. Initially advertised as a compromise cartridge for large game or varmints at long range, it initially experienced a dwindling off of interest as the recoil and barrel wear were both considered more than what other calibers offered in either a dedicated varmint round or a larger big game cartridge.
