With the unveiling of their .500 cartridge and handgun in 2003, Smith & Wesson introduced the world to the most powerful handgun cartridge without running afoul as a “destructive device” by the National Firearms Act. Smith’s .500 was designed from the start to be the top of the line when it came to something that could be fired out of a revolver without having to register the firearm as something other than a firearm. The practical application was to be able to take down anything in the North American continent with a handgun. Out of a rifle, the cartridge is simply that much more devastating. The 275 grain solid copper hollow point bullet by Magtech has a muzzle velocity of 1667 feet per second with 1697 foot pounds of energy behind it. Solid copper bullets are “green” in that there is no lead to worry about, but also lighter to get more velocity. The copper hollow point also promises maximum expansion after hitting the target. This is a premium hunting round.
