Introduced in 1934 as a law enforcement upgrade, Smith & Wesson’s .357 Magnum was a lengthened .38 Special case with a larger primer to provide improved penetration and knock down capabilities in the age of the motorized bank robber. Offering improved performance without having to require police officers to become proficient with a firearm other than their reliable revolvers, the .357 was the best side arm caliber law enforcement had for a time yet remains a very popular caliber with recreational shooters and hunters.
