The 1930’s saw American law enforcement searching for a higher performing cartridge than Smith & Wesson’s own .38 Special. In 1934 Smith & Wesson lengthened their proven .38 Special and included a larger primer to guarantee maximum powder burn. While developed for police work, the .357 Magnum is not a common law enforcement round today.
