Details

The .50 Action Express cartridge almost appears as if it were built on a dare. In fact, when it was introduced to US markets, it was almost instantly banned because the bullet diameter measured .510” and exceeded BATFE definitions of a destructive device. It was remodeled and resized to .50” in a tapered case to be acceptable. Like all pistol calibers of this stature its primary purpose is personal defense against large predators, though it is rumored, mostly jokingly, to also be employed as a back-up anti vehicle weapon by the Israeli Defense Force.

The soft point, 350 grain bullet from Magnum Research has a muzzle velocity of 1411 feet per second with 1547 foot pounds of energy. It is well suited for use in hunting or personal defense in the woods or the streets, especially in jurisdictions where hollow point ammunition is prohibited for such uses.

Magnum Research Industries is responsible not only for the design of the Desert Eagle Pistol but also for its chambering in the .50 Action Express caliber. The Minnesota based arms and ammunition maker is now owned by Kahr Arms. Boxer primed, brass cases are reloadable for further value to reloading aficionados.
