With its 624 ft lbs muzzle energy, this 357 Magnum cartridge from Hornady’s Critical Defense line of ammunition would be a powerhouse even if it had a conventional bullet. But it has got Hornady’s 125 grain FTX, making it an extremely safe bet for the beefy revolver you carry for self-defense.

This round’s bullet is, in essence, a jacketed hollow point, able to reliably penetrate its target that it may unleash devastating expansion within it. What sets the FTX apart is the polymer post that sits in its nose cavity -- that prevents the hollow from clogging with debris like fabric and wall board before it can do its job, and jams inward to make said devastating expansion an all the more certain occurrence.

A Critical Defense cartridge also offers a reloadable nickel plated shell casing, and is accordingly greatly immunized against corrosion and slips in and out of a chamber with ease. Shiny nickel further makes this round easier to see in the dark, and its low flash propellant suits it even better for self-defense in the nighttime. A duller muzzle flash won’t blind immediately following your first shot, so you’ll be able to accurately line up your following five shots!
