Details

Winchester introduced the .32 Winchester Special in 1901 as a larger diameter alternative to their .30-30 rifle round. Intended as an option for reloaders with an interest in using black powder and their own cast bullets, this round offered interesting options in its time. Additionally, it was advertised to shooters looking for a harder hitting round than the .30-30 but with less recoil than the .30-03 Army. Actual performance was not dissimilar to the .30-30 but it did offer a larger wound channel, especially with bullets that are designed to expand. The 165 grain Hornady flex tip bullet has a muzzle velocity of 2410 feet per second with 2128 foot pounds of energy. The Flex Tip bullet offers maximum expansion of the bullet after penetration as well as a safety feature to loading in tube fed magazines: the caliber was primarily available in the model Winchester 1894.

Hornady and Speer began business together as manufacturers of bullet jackets from spent rimfire cases in the 1940s. In 1964 Hornady began manufacturing premium handgun and rifle ammunition on reloadable cases. The Flex Tip Technology bullet by Hornady is their premium personal defense and hunting round, giving impressive performance to this older cartridge.
