Details
Prepare to enter a magical new world … of 5.56x45 range ammunition! Federal Premium’s American Eagle line of ammunition is a perennial favorite at gun ranges coast to coast, and it ought to make any AR or other 5.56 rifle purr like a kitten that just had its milk.
This is an “XM193” cartridge. What the heck does that mean? Two things: “X” means it was made for civilians instead of the government, and “M193” means it satisfies the specs for the U.S. Army’s most basic type of 5.56 ammo.
This cartridge’s 55 grain bullet is a full metal jacket boat tail. It’s got a lead core and gilding metal jacket – neither of which can attract a magnet, so no worries there – as well as a boat tail. That’s a tapered base: a feature which reduces drag to maximize velocity retention, as well as reduce the impact of wind drift.
This ammo’s Boxer primers have military-style crimps, which are only of concern to handloaders. Its brand new brass cases have never before sparkled in the light of day. Sure, they’re gray around the shoulders, but all that means is they weren’t shined up after they were annealed. That has zero implications for reloadability or in-rifle performance!
