The differences between 7.62 NATO and .308 Winchester are less in the powder loads than in the bullet types. Certainly the Winchester cartridge, loaded to marginally higher pressures, has a greater diversity of bullet types as it is intended mostly for hunting purposes, including large and dangerous predators. The 7.62 NATO is intended more for military use and abides by the international laws restricting the types of bullets acceptable for such purposes: full metal jacketed. This makes them well suited for accuracy if not terminal ballistics. However, that does not mean the NATO round is a wimp: Magtech’s 147 grain FMJ bullet has a muzzle velocity of 2707 feet per second with 2385 foot pounds of energy. This is perfect for DCM style matches, range training and of course, civil defense.
