Winchester’s Short Magnum .300 was introduced in 2001 to deliver very similar ballistic performances to the full-sized Win .300 Magnum. While the larger case has proven very versatile and even adopted for military and police precision shooting purposes, its larger case and uses of resources makes it not a particularly cost-efficient round. Further, while not requiring a particularly long action for its ballistic capabilities, it is not a particularly fast handling cartridge – more suitable for prone and bench shooting.

The Winchester Short Mag, however, is capable of delivering magnum performance in a shorter case allowing for a more versatile hunting platform with a shorter action. The 155 grain polymer tipped BXR bullet by Browning has a muzzle velocity of 3260 feet per second with 3657 foot pounds of energy. This is an ideal hunting cartridge for everything from boar to elk.

This example of Browning’s Controlled Expansion Terminal Tip (BXR) bullet offers a polymer tip and bonded core to the jacketing to deliver superior accuracy and maximum mass retention with expansion delivering optimum terminal ballistics in the field. Dropping the target is just as important as hitting it when in the woods where other predators may snatch up your kill before recovery. Of course, Browning cartridges are loaded in boxer primed, brass cases.
