In 2003 the US military began addressing the concerns of the 5.56 NATO cartridge not delivering enough knock down power at short and medium ranges out of the standard M4 carbine when compared to the AK-47’s 7.62x39. While the latter had *reported* accuracy issues (more to do with training and maintenance than the round itself), that the military did not want to duplicate, the terminal ballistics of the round was an advantage they wished to explore. One round that made it past the drawing board was Remington’s 6.8 Special Purpose Carbine (SPC). The round does offer increased knock down potential than the NATO round, but was not adopted for wide spread replacement. Only requiring an upper swap out, however, encouraged many special forces, and quite a few sportsmen, to adopt it for their own purposes. After all there is something to be said for an upgrade that can turn an AR-15 into the ballistic equivalent of a self-loading .30-30.

Remington’s 115 grain full metal jacket round has a nominal muzzle velocity of 2575 feet per second with 1694 foot pounds of energy. The bullet is designed for target shooting and firearms training: and 200 rounds is a good start.

The Remington name is almost as old as the United States itself and remains one of the oldest consistent firearms companies still in business. That name ‘s association with quality and dependability is maintained by their ammunition with quality bullets and premium brass cases that are harvested by reloaders for its durability and consistent performance as the company begins its third century of business.
