When the French replaced their trail blazing 8mm Level rifle round in 1924, they initially adopted a round very similar to the German 7.92x57 (8mm Mauser) cartridge. Eager to avoid any battlefield pick up mistakes, they shortened the round enough to ensure any chamber for it would not accept the German ammunition. It remained the primary French military round through to the 1990’s even for a time after France joined NATO. The reason was very well because the French round offers very similar ballistic performances to the .308, and logistics appeared little reason to change.
