223 Rem Ammo

.223 ammo is widely used at almost every rifle range in the US due to the universal popularity of the AR-15 platform. The .223 Remington is the civilian counterpart of the 5.56 NATO cartridge and can be used in any rifle chambered in 5.56 NATO (the reverse is not always true). It is well-regarded as an easy to handle round, delivering good medium-range ballistics and relatively low felt recoil. A typical .223 Rem load fires a 55 or 62 grain bullet at a muzzle velocity of about 3,000 feet per second.

Reflecting the cartridge's high degree of versatility, .223 Remington ammo comes in many varieties. With the appropriate jacketed hollow point or soft point ammo, the .223 Rem can be employed in a defensive or hunting role. For precision or competitive shooting, heavy (77 grain or higher) match projectiles are preferred due to their better stability and wind resistance. Finally, shooters looking to train at the range will find the best bang for their buck with cheap but accurate full metal jacket rounds. Hunters should note that this caliber is not legal for deer in all states.
