The .308 Winchester was designed to deliver full sized .30 caliber rifle performance out of a shorter action. Initially for use in self-loading rifles, after the caliber’s introduction in 1952 it became a very popular sporting round for both hunting on every continent and for military competitive shooting. While physically identical to the 7.62 NATO round, the .308 is actually loaded a bit hotter, yet SAAMI specs state that either caliber is safe for shooting out of the other chamber, which only adds to the round’s versatility.
